Plovdiv
Welcome to one of the oldest cities in the world with a modern twist
Why Plovdiv?
All the comforts of the big city with a small town feel
Vibrant artistic neighbourhood "Kapana"
Lots of cultural events and festivals
Plenty of sunshine all year round and colourful 4 seasons
Surrounded by mountains and historical sights
Ancient city with ca. 8000 years of history
The present city of Plovdiv is believed to have been founded in 6000 BC, just like Troy.
The numerous archaeological findings from the Thracian, Roman and Byzantine times not only evoke its glorious past, but blend seamlessly with the modern architecture of the city.
In the most recent times - during Renaissance - Plovdiv lived its own revival period. Many of its wealthy residents traveled through Europe, bringing back with them new knowledge and cultural trends and building sumptuous houses, with authentic and rich ornamentation, which we find nowadays in the Old Town, one of the symbols of Plovdiv.
A binder of history, trends and different communities, Bulgarians, Armenians, Turks and Hebrews coexist today in pure harmony in the city.
As a recognition to its cultural richness, Plovdiv has been selected European Capital of Culture during 2019.
A modern city with vibrant cultural life
Just as Rome, Athens or Jerusalem, Plovdiv is often referred to as the "City of Seven Hills". The hills of Plovdiv (or tepeta) are the favourite place for relaxation and entertainment of locals and visitors alike.
Local people are in fact often referred to by fellow Bulgarians as very laid-back and leisurely oriented. It is said that life here is ayliak, which is very easy, fun and carefree. Even on weekdays the terraces of the main street are full of people, as are the parks of young people, enjoying life. The night also offers something for everyone, every day of the week.
Another surprise right in the center of the city is Kapana (the "Trap") neighbourhood which is a joy to get lost in. This was the old artisan quarter of Plovdiv. Its streets still evoke the past with names such as Kozhuharska (of leather), Zhelezarska (of iron) or Zlatarska (of gold). Today Kapana is a bohemian neighbourhood - with many art galleries, cafes and small restaurants - the artists' quarter, which vibrates with its street musicians, performances and events.
