The fourth biggest Bulgarian city - second largest in the Black sea coast - is the place where most of the Summer holidays start for Bulgarians and foreigners alike. In the era of "sun and sand" tourism, Burgas region emerged as a popular destination, however the city itself remained simply as a transit point to the more appealing resorts alongside the coast.

There are certainly plenty of beautiful sites to visit nearby. Such is the historic town of Nessebar. This is a three millennia old UNESCO heritage site, which has played an important role in history, specially during the Antiquity and Medieval eras. Its ancient architectural heritage has been also enriched by the 19th century construction of typical for the time wooden houses.

When it comes to the sun and sand lovers, there are numerous beautiful beaches to go to during the hot summer months, while, the most adventurous can practise surf and other activities off season, too. No matter the time, the astonishing seaside landscapes are worth exploring.

Nature lovers will also get their curiosity challenged by the mysterious Strandzha mountain and its dense forests, rivers and variety of plants.

Those that actually decide to stop over in Burgas find a vibrant, well-kept city, with a long pedestrian centre, a wonderful seafront park, variety of museums and lots of outdoor restaurants with fresh seafood. Burgas is full of life and offers to its residents and guests lots of activities, events and festivals all-year-round.

Jump on a boat and visit Saint Anastasia Island - also known as the "Bulgarian Alcatraz", given its former use as a prison - or Chengele Skele, what used to be fishing town turned recently into enthnographic complex, where to get familiar with old fishing practices.

The nearby located lakes and dams represent a true oasis for migrating birds, as one of the main migratory flows - known as "Via Pontica" - passes right through these lands. This creates almost year-round a wonderful atmosphere for nature-, biodiversity- and bird-watching lovers.

Burgas and the region are also very popular for the abundance of mineral waters, among the reasons why Romans turned it into a key settlement. In fact, its salt sea lakes - such as Atanasovsko, right next to the city - are also source of a very particular mud famous for its extreme healing properties.
